Why Variety Doesn't Work

I know when you're starting a new diet, it can be very exciting. You're making all these lists of foods you can and can't eat, adding up calories, throwing away stuff that shouldn't be in your fridge, keeping a journal recording your food/ exercise regime. Maybe you can do it for a week or two, or maybe even a month. Let's be honest, if we kept this up more than a month we wouldn't really be here...

The reason why this kind of excessive planning doesn't work, is because it's too much work!!! I feel the easiest way to actually be able to stay on point with the calorie count without cheating here and there is to have the same thing every single day. It’s easier on your mind and your budget.

YES- It’s boring- and it will get old. But do this for TWO weeks. Only two weeks, and you will see a major difference in the quantity of food you can eat. Give your body just enough time to adjust to the decrease in calories before trying anything fancy. And when you do, take it slow.

This way you can’t have something you’re not supposed to. You only buy just enough to last you a week or two; this way there’s no excess food lying around the house.

SNACKS: Honestly, I don’t think you should be snacking during this time. Even if it’s within your daily calorie limits. We need to get around this impulse we have to be constantly eating/snacking throughout the day. I know I tend to snack out of boredom, or because I think I’m hungry when I’m really not, or if it’s just been a while since my last meal.

How many of you eat lunch and think about what you’re going to make for dinner? BAD BAD BAD- We need to rewire or brains a little. I know “5 small meals a day speed up your metabolism blah blah blah-“ Fuck metabolism. If you get used to 5 small meals a day, you’re teaching your body to be constantly hungry. And if ONE DAY, you have shitty foods laying around- there goes 3-4k calories in a day. We are not perfect.

Besides, like I’ve said before- WHO has the time and energy to worry about 5 meals. 3 is hard enough to keep track of.

Eat to live, not the other way around.

    When I lost a stone (without trying or being conscious of it) 2 years ago. I made my food in bulk and ate the same thing everyday, it got boring but I think the best way to lose weight is to make food boring. I was my healthiest as a child, my mum used to post our food timetable for the week on the fridge, and there wasn't too much excitement about it. It's not like when you're sat around and thinking "I can have pizza, pasta, chinese, portugese, fried chicken, maybe mexican, ..." and so forth.

    When food is boring it loses it's hold..

  2. BLAH!! So I just started following your blog after seeing your videos (btw super brave to put both your face and your weight loss stuff on something soooo public). I am soooo inspired by you and your outlook on losing weight and the gives and takes you have to be ready for. BTW went to the University of Buffalo and just came back to jersey after weird adjusting but so glad to be home cause those buffalo winters can make being homebound (cause of snow) a HUGE drag.   3. These are really great tips. I've been trying to do the 5 meals a day thing, but you're right, it does make you constantly think about food. I'm still trying to find a routine that works for me. I think I'm going to try the whole monotonization of food thing that you're suggesting. Thanks for the tip!

  4. i have been counting cals like you and its wonderful! i lose apound a day.about 3 days ago i stopped losing and actually gained a pound. so the next day i fasted but nothing happened. i didnt give up but right now istopped losing anyweight... am i doing something wrong?

  5. absolutely love this tip. i have always beenfat, and the reason why i think i find it hard to lose weight is because im so fixated on food. recently i turned 16. As seven year old girl looking on to the future i thought being 16 fore held alot of prosperity for me. mostly that i would be thin and the most confident thing anyones ever crossed paths with. all it held was a license:/ so now im takng on this journey for me and that seven year old girl. and you are possibly one of the biggest inspirations i have.
